My recent experience at the Getaway House “Gwendolyn”
Outside Dallas, just over an hour drive you will find yourself nestled in the countryside of LaRue, Texas. After passing by fields for days, you will find The Getaway House(s) ready for you to kick back and relax without the sounds of honked horns & mild heart attacks of 75 traffic.
When I booked my trip, it didn’t take long for me to pull the trigger and book a stay. Reviews were excellent, it’s budget friendly and the detailed FAQ page covers literally everything you need to know about your stay. With options for single beds or double bed stays, make your solo debut or bring your besties and make it an experience together just like the good ole days of summer camp!
Essential List
My packing list was the lightest it’s ever been and will ever be. There is something so refreshing knowing that you don’t need a lot and you can still survive just fine. Knowing that the internet would be questionable, I packed plenty of things to keep me occupied. See my full list below for my “getaway” essentials.
- Eno Hammock
- Bug Spray
- Sunglasses
- Coloring Book
- 2 Books
- Bible
- Journal
- Birks / Chacos / or Tennis Shoes
- Comfy Sweater
- NO HAIR TOOLS!! (bc who cares!)
- Trail Mix
- Breakfast Bar
- 2 Large Water Bottles (even though they have drinking water available)
- Pre-made dinner (I don’t know how to start a fire and will not by myself!)
- Tea / Coffee ( I am picky so I brought my own but they have some you could purchase)
When I booked my stay, there was a comment section for why you are booking a stay – anything specific, getaway with the girls, etc etc. My comment was “to chill on my birthday” and they left me a s’mores kit with a thoughtful note on the dining table. These are the things that make a stay a real experience that you want to come back to.
Amenities
As far as all the amenities go, the bed was very comfortable and clean, the kitchen was stocked with the minimal must-haves, and the bathroom was tiny and just enough. The only downfall to the bathroom was the shower floor. The water pressure is fairly heavy and the floor is almost flat to the ground. There isn’t a very good system for keeping the water from spilling onto the floor outside the shower. Other than that, you will be very impressed. I also had no idea what to expect, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Now, pro tip. Turn your phone on airplane mode and set yourself up for taking time away from the screen. Your mind, body and soul will thank you! Now, go “getaway!”
